What is Research Data Management?
Research Data Management, or RDM, is the responsible stewardship of the data created or generated as part of a research project. It involves the responsible storage, description, and protection of research data, and should be an integral early part of any research project.
Why is Research Data Management important?
- Funders and journal publishers are increasingly making RDM a priority and a requirement including the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy.

What are research data?
Data can take many forms, including but not limited to: photographs, audio or video recordings, survey results, computer code, designs or diagrams, etc. Research data can be any materials you created during your research activities and have chosen to retain.

- Research Data Management in the Canadian Context: A Guide for Practitioners and Learners, (English edition) has been officially published as of September 30, 2023. This open educational resource is significant within the Canadian academic and government communities as it addresses unique aspects of Research Data Management (RDM) that apply to the Canadian context. Already in use across Canada as a course textbook or offering guidance to practitioners, the launch of this text has been met with great anticipation and excitement!
- Portage Network has announced the publication of five new guidance documents from the Portage COVID-19 Working Group. These guidance documents were developed to help support research data management in accordance with the RDA COVID-19 Guidelines and Recommendations. Access the guidance documents here.
