Faculty Guide to Streaming Videos in the Classroom

A guide for faculty streaming video resources in the classroom.

Streaming Video Recommendations

It is strongly recommended that all faculty planning to stream videos in classrooms test the functionality of their computers and browsers in the planned classroom before attempting to stream the video during lectures.

When using either Criterion-on-Demand or Kanopy, we currently recommend using Edge as the browser. If using Firefox, the streaming platform may not load the video.

It has been our experience that, while Firefox is listed as a preferred browser, there is currently an unknown issue that is preventing the Firefox browser from opening and running streaming platforms. Please see below for further system requirements.

If a Film Keeps Buffering and Won't Play:

If you are experiencing buffering on a video, or if a film is not playing, follow the troubleshooting tips below.

Improve your Internet connection
We recommend an Internet speed of at least 5Mbps for an HD stream. If your connection is any less, try moving closer to your router, moving your router to a more central location, or connecting your computer directly to your modem.

Update your browser or try a different one

Clear your browser cache
If many items have been stored in your cache, you may experience some lag when trying to stream.

Restart your device
A restart of your device can fix a lot of problems you may be running into. Try turning your device completely off, then power back on and return to Kanopy.

CRITERION-ON-DEMAND

If you are using IE11 in Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, you may be required to install the Microsoft Silverlight Plugin. This is not required if you are accessing Criterion-on-Demand in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or IE in Windows 10.

Criterion-on-Demand will not work on a mobile device.

ACADEMIC VIDEO ONLINE

Windows: Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Google Chrome

Mac OS X: Mojave, Firefox, and Google Chrome

Please note, we are currently unable to support DRM playback on iOS devices, or in the Apple Safari browser. At this time, this only effects our Sony Pictures Classics titles, for which users will need to use a desktop browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.

Playback of immersive, 360 Virtual Reality videos, using VR headsets such as Google Daydream or Google Cardboard, is currently only supported on Android devices.

CAMPUS

You will need to be equipped with the following:

1. HTML-5 friendly browser (newer versions of Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera)

2. Windows 2000 or higher with latest updates installed, or Mac OS X 10.10 or higher

3. The latest version of Google Chrome or Safari or Firefox or Internet Explorer 11.0+

To accommodate different internet connection speeds, you can select various quality levels in the bottom right-hand corner of the player. Choosing 360p or 480p will lower the quality of the film, but might be better for seamless viewing on a slower internet connection

We recommend a broadband connection for optimal viewing. This will allow you to choose to 720p or 1080p serrings, which will greatly enhance the quality of the image and sound
