What is Personal Information Management

Researchers manage information in an infinite number of ways. Methods used may be unique, may change over time, or be specific to a research project. This guide compares efficient digital information management tools, and effective Personal Information Management (PIM) techniques. These tools and techniques can be used on their own or in conjunction with others, such as Research Data Management Plans and the University’s Research Storage platform.

PIM can be thought of as all the tools and methods used to manage your own information: administrative information, project management, teaching, supervision, research. PIM can be lightweight and only semi-formalized, highly-structured and filled with compliance mechanisms, and anything in between. This guide will present some popular tools for personal information management, some methodologies for managing your personal information, and suggestions for further information related to research support, research data management, data storage, publishing and dissemination.
