Neurodiversity - Resources for Studying and Teaching : Dyslexia Learning Strategies

About Dyslexia

"Dyslexia is a learning disability that disrupts how your brain processes written language. People with dyslexia have trouble with reading and related skills. It’s very treatable, and it doesn’t have to stand in the way of success."

(From the Cleveland Clinic)

Getting Started

  • Use the Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech tools in Microsoft Office -- see video on Library's YouTube channel.
  • Use dyslexic-friendly fonts (see boxes below); request that your instructors also provide documents using these fonts.
  • Use the Assignment Timeline Calculator to schedule the dates by when key tasks must be completed.
  • Colour-code your notes, or associating pictures with certain words or reading passages gives you visual cues to spark your memory
  • Use Flash cards for studying
    • Great for colour-coded visuals too
    • Add images & icons to flashcards, even just a star, circle, or square, to help associate what you are learning with a visual queue
    • You can bring cards with you anywhere to study at any time
    • Separate cards with content you know, from the ones you don’t.
